I always wanted to just stay at home and be with my kids. But then, being 7 months pregnant and earning no money made me feel useless. I somehow crave the hustle and bustle brought about by being an employee.

So to ease my boredom, I browsed the web for some work at home opportunities. And then I saw a post on a website about a company hiring English online tutors. I read through the job post and immediately sent an inquiry through email. Β I immediately got a response enlisting all the requirements and procedures for the application process. I scanned through it and realized that I was qualified, so yes, I applied!

The entire process to actually starting on the job may take two weeks. Let me share to you a few details:

1. Phone interview.
I received a call from a RareJob staff who verified details on my resume. This is just like any normal interview: describe yourself, your hobbies, what your plans are, and some follow-up questions. Just be ready to describe and differentiate some parts of speech and idioms.

2. Email
Upon passing the initial interview, I received an email stating so and details on the next step of the application process. The email will also contain your training details. This is one great thing about RareJob, you will be guided accordingly on the steps to take through email.

3. Training via skype
My training lasted for 2 hours. It includes a brief introduction between me and the trainer, expectation setting and the mock lessons. Yes! You will be the teacher and your trainer will pretend to be the Japanese student. Just follow the guidelines and you’ll do just fine.

4. Requirements submission
I received an email right after my mock lesson stating that I passed, hooray! The email will also include the requirements you need to submit before you get to start on the job. Once you complete all that is needed, you may have to wait for a maximum of three days to get a response from the application team. It’s worth the wait, so I didn’t mind.

5. Getting hired
Again, this is through email but this time it included details about my favorite topic: wage and incentives haha! You just have to set-up a BPI or PNB account, or if you already have one then good for you!

6. Familiarize yourself with the RareJob policies, fix your schedule slots and start having your lessons booked! I will share about my first RareJob tutoring class in my next post.

It truly is a wonderful experience to know you are earning without having to leave your love ones at mercy of a nanny or a relative. It is something I hope to share to mothers everywhere.

Happy work-at-home days to come everyone!

I am no longer working for RareJob, so for questions regarding their policy, rate, employee benefits/ compensation, Β I do think it is best to direct such queries to RareJob’s Facebook page instead.Β

I would love to help as much as I can, but for such concern better ask those still with RJ πŸ™‚ Β God bless!

  1. Hi mommadaise! Are you still working on RareJob? I’m going to have my Skype interview this Monday and I’m really nervous about it. I have no teaching experience whatsoever. Any tips? πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks for dropping by! Yes, I’m still with RareJob, just not that active πŸ™‚ For the skype interview, they’ll just confirm what’s written on your resume and if you pass, you’ll be sent an email regarding the details of the mock lesson. It’s just like a normal job interview, I’m sure you’ll ace it! God bless!

    2. Hi! Yes I’m still with RareJob. You have to study the email they sent you, always speak in English and watch out for the students slips in grammar. The trainer will act as if he/she doesn’t really know English to see how you will approach the situation. Just be yourself, relax and enjoy!

Hi there! Regarding the mock lessons in Skype, will the trainer still give instructions or the lesson will start right away? πŸ™‚

Hi ma’am! Your post is really helpful. I just had my phone interview days ago, and I am now scheduled for the Skype training. What tips can you give in planning and conducting the lesson? Thank you so much in advance.:)

    1. Great to hear you passed the initial interview. Emailed my response to your concern.

  17. Hi mommadaise,I’m currently working as an online instructor for Koreans,I worked for a private company,I’m planning to be a work at home mom ,I already filled up the application form on rarejob..Can I ask for some advice or tips in the interview process? thanks in advance! =)

    1. Thanks for visiting my blog Jenelyn! Emailed response to your request.

    2. Hi! How was your application in Rarejob? I am supposed to have my interview but when they called they asked if I am currently working, I said yes because I am working part-time as an ESL teacher. So, the interviewer said that he will be sending me an email regarding that for clarifications. I have not received the email yet and it makes me feel uneasy.

      1. If I remember it correctly, once you are with RareJob you cannot work in any other ESL company. I suggest you just wait for the email, and decide from there. πŸ™‚

    1. Yes, your trainer will act as your student. Did not have a female/male manual when I had my interview back then so I really can’t say especially that I haven’t seen the email. So just read the instructions on the email sent, read through it carefully and decide. Good luck!

Hi, ate. I need tips too. I can’t be more nervous as I am now. I’ve just turned 18 and this is my first attempt at getting any kind of employment. Haha. Should I prepare for both lessons? Do I let the trainer read the rest of the selection or only the 2nd paragraph (it was vaguely stated in the sample lesson that I should let the student read the second paragraph)? Thank you in advance. β™₯ My assessment is tomorrow. I do hope I do well. Hihi.

Hi there! Thanks for your blog. I am considering working at home but currently with a BPO. I haven’t applied yet in Rarejob though most probably will do so after careful thinking. I just would like to know, would this kind of work at home suffice for a family of 7? I really would like to spend more time with my children. Hope you can enlighten me. Thank you very much. Godbless.

    1. Hi Len! I really can’t say if working with RJ will be enough, as it all depends on your family’s lifestyle. If you’re a hard worker, you may earn around P20K- P25K. But I haven’t earned such amount in a month with RareJob,as I don’t do it full time. Having worked in the BPO industry before, I’m pretty sure you earn more than what you may earn with RJ, so you may just do this as additional source of income during weekend. I guess, you’ll just need to analyze your situation and determine what your priorities are at the moment so you can decide what’s the best course of action to take.

      Thanks for dropping by!

    Hi po!

i just submitted an application yesterday but i have not receive any response yet. im curious, exactly how much are they paying for a part time job and what are the usual schedule? I hope you can enlighten me regarding this.

    Thank you and God bless!

    1. They will call you, just be patient. They usually call 2-3 days, maximum of one week after you submit your application.

The pay rate you get per hour will be based on your performance in the mock call. It’s up to you if you want to make this a part-time or full-time job. You get paid based on how many hours you’ve rendered.

Hi mommadaise!! Your blog has been super helpful. I’ve been waiting for my phone interview for 4 days now (since I passed the English Proficiency Test) but have not received any call. Should I have gotten an email first confirming the phone interview? I did send them my “preferred phone interview schedule” but I think I might have gotten the content/format of the message wrong:

“Preferred Training Dates: Monday – Thursday
Preferred Training Time Slots: Anytime between 4 – 6 pm on Monday
2 – 6 pm on Tuesday to Thursday”

    What should I have written?
    thank you

    1. They might be receiving a lot of applications, just be patient. For the interview schedule, it’s really up to you dear. Just make sure it’s within the available time slots for your chosen day.

    1. I have no idea what the questions are, as I don’t have experience with the new hiring procedures. The key is to study and understand the email they will send you regarding the upcoming exams/assessments.

Send you an email. Thanks for dropping by!

Good evening, mommadaise. Your blog is really helpful. I took their EPT and I passed it, next step will be the TSA, I just wondered what TSA is, what will happen during that time and so on. Mommadaise, I need your help, can you please give me some tips as part of my preparation? I’m a mother of two, soon to be a mother of three, so I’m planning to really work at home. Hi Mommadise! I already passed TSA and I just read their email about the salary. May I ask how high the rate could possibly go? Because the reason why I joined Rarejob is because I thought the salary would be higher than my previous company. Thanks.

    1. Email sent Chai… but really, the motivation shouldn’t be the salary. More than anything else, what matters is that you are passionate in teaching. πŸ™‚

Hi! Your blog is very informative.
Just one I need to submit some papers like school records and the likes?

    1. Hi Leigh! During my time, I was asked to submit either a scanned copy of my diploma or transcript of records. Not that sure of what they require now, but I do think they will still be asking for some “proof” that you graduated from college. Thanks for dropping by!

hi! i am a newbie as an online tutor. i am working for rarejob. i opened my slots 2 days ago for today Oct 6, 2014 – 6:30-7:30 AM which was supposed to be my first class. Unfortunately i messed up. I added the students in Skype and waited for the class to start. Of course, not being so familiar with the system i just thought that was all i needed to do. i was surprised to see that the codes changed to 204 – tutor is absent then the following opened slots for the day were changed to 208. What should do? What should i need to do in beginning the class? how to check which module would work for the student? do i need to create the feedback from/notes after the class?? i need some clarification on these matters. maybe techniques as well! Thanks!

    1. Please review the links on lesson management on the left hand side of your RJ profile. I am no longer updated on their procedures so I think it’s best to ask RareJob’s support team regarding your concern. You can message some of them via skype too.

Hi mommadise! Thank you for this post. I’m so grateful I’ve stumbled upon your blog. I am about to take the TSA. I can say that my English is good, including the accent. But this is my first time, and frankly I don’t have the experience nor an official ESL certification. Is being good, and sounding good when speaking English, enough to get you the job, aside from possessing tutor skills? Are there any other factors to consider? If you can share some ideas and tips, that would be very great! More power to you. Godbless!

Hi πŸ™‚ Hope you could fill me in with some details because I highly consider applying at RareJob. Can you give me some hint on the figures that I may earn working as their tutor? How much could I possibly expect as a newb? Would I be able to impress the trainers at the test and the interview even if I am not a UP student (they prefer UP students and graduates from what I’ve heard)?

    Thanks in advance! πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Christa! I’m not really sure of what the rate is now. I believe they do say approximately how much you can earn in their website. And no, they do not prefer UP students only. For the specific details and other concerns, I believe it’s best you ask them directly. You may simply post your question on RareJob’s FB page. Thanks and God bless!

Hello mommadaise, do you know how much are the incentives? the video usage, the tutoring notes and the good attendance? thank you πŸ™‚
Like you, I got pregnant and feel useless for being just a bum here at my bf’s house. And a lot of expenses are coming our way, so I have to do something, then I found Rarejob’s ad. πŸ™‚
I hope you can respond to my question mommadaise. Godbless!

    1. HI simplyjane! I am really not the best person to ask about RareJob’s rate nowadays, as I am no longer working for the company.Kindly direct your response to RJ’s FB page. Thanks!
